OSU seeking bids for Sunflower House
Apr 10, 2018The 1909 structure at 128 SW Ninth St. in Corvallis currently houses the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center. However, the university plans to build an upper-division student housing project on the Lower Campus site and is paying $200,000 to help the literacy center move to quarters on Northwest Jackson Avenue. The university is accepting bids for the structure only, with bidding closing June 15 at 3 p.m. The minimum bud is $18,246, with the buyer responsible for all permits, safety and liability in removal of the building. The university is responsible for any abatement necessary before removal. No removal can take place before Aug. 15, and anyone buying the building and seeking to relocate it must do so by Sept. 15 at 5 p.m."Oregon State University has a strong interest in protecting and enhancing OSU-owned buildings and properties statewide that have important university and community significance," says the item description of the building in a notice from the university's surplus property office. "This interest must be balanced with the university's land grant educational, research and service mission to the people of Oregon. With these two interests in mind, the university wishes to provide the opportunity for a private community member or community group to purchase and relocate the building prior to the university's planned utilization of the property for other purposes."Remodeling of the Jackson Avenue building, which formerly housed the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center, is expected to be completed the first week of July, and literacy center officials say they hope to move in on or after Monday, July 9.Backers of the center, which provides a range of cultural, language and education services, have spoken before the Corvallis City Council, held a public forum and appealed to the OSU Board of Trustees, calling for efforts to find a way to preserve the house.
